Reality of Gods, Demons & Idols

Reality of Gods, Demons & Idols

In the Torah, Moses, warned the people of God (and by extension all of humanity), that the one true and living God demands loyalty. In Exodus 20 Moses warns:

“I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
“You shall have no other gods before Me.
“You shall not make for yourself a carved image-any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God…”

Moses wrote of “other gods.” Who are these other gods? These are demonic spirits cloaking themselves as gods. There is but one God (see Deuteronomy 6:4 for the declaration). There is no other (Isaiah 43:10-11).

The apostle Paul, in the New Testament, provides a very clear connection with idolatry (the false worship of other gods and demons) and spiritual forces. He writes in 1 Corinthians 10:

“What am I saying then? That an idol is anything, or what is offered to idols is anything? Rather, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice they sacrifice to demons and not to God, and I do not want you to have fellowship with demons. You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons; you cannot partake of the Lord’s table and of the table of demons.”

See the connection? When the gentiles were sacrificing to idols, they were in reality sacrificing unto demons. There’s only two powers at work –God’s power and the powers of darkness. In the exorcism ministry, we often come across demons named after gods: Baal, Moloch, Odin and there are so many others. Recently, I encountered Poseidon (picture of him above). He’s a god of water, seas and earthquakes. When I confronted him, he cloaked himself as a powerful being (like a god) but when I brought my cross of deliverance. He quickly submitted to the superior power –the powers of the God-man, the Lord Jesus Christ. Our great God –the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit cannot be outdone. He stands alone as Creator of all things. We ought to worship Him and Him alone! Amen!
